A military brat born and raised at Ft. Benning Georgia; TM Smith is an avid reader, reviewer and writer. A Texas transplant, she now calls DFW her home. Most days she can be found curled up with a good book, or ticking away on her next novel.
Smith is a single mom of three disturbingly outspoken and decidedly different kids, one of which is Autistic. Besides her writing, she is passionate about Autism advocacy and LGBT rights. Because, seriously people, Love is Love!
So, what have you written?
I have a SciFi Dystopian series, Opposites, with 4 books currently released in that series. (Opposites, The Library, Appearances, The Cellar) And I’m working on book 3, Snapped, looking at an early 2017 release.
Then there is my contemporary gay romance series, All Cocks. There are currently 6 books available in that series with book 7 coming in the spring of 2017.
How many books to your series? (if it is a series)
2 novels and 2 novellas thus far in Opposites… 6 books thus far in All Cocks.
Do you think that giving books away free works and why?
Of course, I do. There are always readers out there that don’t have the funds to purchase but really want to read. I would rather gift them a copy of my book than have them searching out a pirated copy. Also, when you give someone a book, they remember and are more likely to purchase another book from you in the future when they do have the money.
What do you love most about the writing process?
Seeing the characters come to life on paper.
How has your writing evolved since your first book?
It’s much better! The more you write, the more feedback from readers you receive, the better you become. I recently went back and pulled the original copy of my first book up on my external hard drive and I tell you, I don’t know what I was thinking. As with anything you do continuously, your craft as Author continues to improve with each new book.
Is there a certain type of scene that’s harder for you to write than any others? Love? Action? Romance? Tragedy?
Action probably. It’s easier to write about things you’ve experienced and who hasn’t been in love, had a passionate romance or experienced a tragedy? Writing about bank robberies or car chases hypothetically are quite harder for me. And let me just say, I’m quite alright having to work that out without having the experience!
What do you think makes your book stand out from the crowd?
I think the series title of All Cocks is a hard one to miss.
What’s the one thing that has really surprised you since you started writing?
That people actually love my books.
Is there a message in your novel that you hope readers grasp?
Yes, be kind to others and true to yourself.
One food you don’t care if you never eat it again.
Would you describe your humour as hilariously funny, oddly quirky, diabolically macabre, or non existent.
Hilariously funny, I think.
5 Things people wouldn’t know about TM Smith?
- I’m utterly fascinated with shows like Snapped and Forensic Files. I can sit and watch for hours on end. The depravity of my fellow man sometimes astonishes me and I want to be sure I know each and every way someone could try to take me out and make it look like an accident.
- I loath Will Ferrell. If he’s in a movie, I won’t watch it.
- I’m a perfectionist.
- I believe in ghosts and angels.
- I don’t like the dark. I won’t say I’m scared of because it’s not that, I just don’t like it. I’ll leave the hallway light on so that when I go to bed, it’s dark in my room, but there is that sliver of light at the bottom of the door.
What is your very favourite holiday destination?
NOLA (New Orleans)
Are there misconceptions people have about your genre?
Yes, that it’s all porn on paper when it’s not.
Do you have a Bucket List? If so top 5 things on it.
- Visit Ireland.
- Learn to play guitar.
- Go surfing.
- Visit Hawaii.
- Have a best selling book.
What are some jobs you’ve held? Have any of them impacted your writing? How?
Oh lord. I’ve thrown newspapers, been a cocktail waitress, a stripper, a legal secretary, an administrative assistant, store manager… the list never ends. I think everyone thing I’ve done impacts my writing as I like to pull reality into my stories.
Have you ever gone to a convention? If so, how was it? If not, do you think it’s something you’d like to do in the future?
Oh yes, I love GRL and Rainbow Book Fair. Cons/Signings are amazing and each one is different. If you’ve not been to one, you really should consider it.
Have you ever written a scene where it has reduced you to tears?
